Almost every Bangladeshi student who plans to study abroad asks the same first question: what IELTS score do I actually need? The honest answer is that there is no single number. Your target band depends on the country, the university, your course level, and — separately — the student visa rules of that country.
This guide breaks down the IELTS score requirements for the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and other popular destinations, explains the difference between a university requirement and a visa requirement, and shows you how to reach the band you need.
What IELTS Score Do You Need to Study Abroad? (Quick Answer)
For most Bangladeshi students, the realistic target is IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall. Below is a country-wise snapshot of typical requirements.
| Country | Typical University Requirement | Student Visa English Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 6.0 – 6.5 overall (7.0 for top universities) | B2 level (roughly IELTS 5.5 in each band) for degree courses |
| USA | 6.0 – 7.0 overall | No fixed IELTS requirement — the university decides |
| Canada | 6.0 – 6.5 overall | No fixed band — set by the institution (DLI) |
| Australia | 6.0 – 6.5 overall | 6.0 overall (5.5 if you add an ELICOS English course) |
| Malaysia | 5.5 – 6.0 overall | Set by the institution |
| Finland / Denmark / Sweden | 6.0 – 6.5 overall | Set by the institution |
University Requirement vs Student Visa Requirement
This is the single biggest point of confusion, and getting it wrong costs students months.
- University (admission) requirement — the band the university needs before it issues your offer letter. This is usually the higher of the two.
- Visa (immigration) requirement — the minimum English level the country’s immigration authority needs before it grants your student visa.
You must satisfy both. In practice, if you meet the university’s requirement you almost always clear the visa requirement automatically — but not the reverse. A 5.5 may get you a visa but not an offer.
IELTS Score for UK Student Visa and Universities
The UK is the most popular destination for Bangladeshi students, and its rules are the most commonly misunderstood.
UK University Requirements
- Undergraduate (Bachelor’s): usually 6.0 overall, with no band below 5.5
- Postgraduate (Master’s): usually 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0
- Top-ranked universities (Russell Group, competitive courses): 7.0 overall and above
- Law, Medicine, Nursing, Teaching: often 7.0 – 7.5, with high Writing and Speaking bands
UK Student Visa (English) Requirement
For degree-level study at a licensed sponsor, the Home Office requires CEFR B2 — broadly equivalent to IELTS 5.5 in each of the four bands. For below-degree courses, you generally need an approved IELTS for UKVI (SELT) test.
IELTS Academic vs IELTS for UKVI — Which One Do You Book?
They test the same content; the difference is the security/reporting standard.
- IELTS Academic — accepted by most UK universities for degree-level courses where the university itself assesses your English.
- IELTS for UKVI (Academic) — required when the Home Office needs a SELT, typically for below-degree courses or a pre-sessional English pathway.
Booking the wrong version is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes Bangladeshi students make. If you are unsure, confirm before you pay — see our Study in the UK guide or ask a counselor.
IELTS Score for USA Universities
The USA has no IELTS requirement for the F-1 student visa itself. Your English level is judged entirely by the university that issues your I-20.
- Community colleges: 5.5 – 6.0
- Undergraduate: 6.0 – 6.5
- Master’s / MS programs: 6.5 – 7.0
- Top-tier universities: 7.0 – 7.5
Many US universities also offer conditional admission: you receive an offer with an English pathway attached, and you complete an intensive English program on campus before your main degree begins. If your band is slightly short, this route is worth asking about. More detail on our Study in the USA page.
IELTS Score for Canada Student Permit and Universities
An important update: the Student Direct Stream (SDS) — which required IELTS 6.0 in each band — was discontinued by IRCC in November 2024. All applicants now apply through the regular study permit stream.
Under the regular stream there is no fixed IELTS band set by immigration. Your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) sets the requirement:
- Colleges / diplomas: 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5
- Undergraduate: 6.0 – 6.5 overall
- Master’s: 6.5 overall, often no band below 6.0
Even though IRCC no longer prescribes a band, a strong, balanced score still strengthens your study permit application — it supports your case as a genuine student. See our Study in Canada guide for the full process.
IELTS Score for Australia Student Visa (Subclass 500)
Australia tightened its student visa English requirement in 2024. For the Subclass 500 student visa:
- IELTS 6.0 overall — standard requirement
- IELTS 5.5 overall — acceptable if you package at least 10 weeks of ELICOS (English language course) before your main program
- IELTS 5.0 overall — may be acceptable with 20 weeks or more of ELICOS
University requirements sit on top of this — typically 6.0 – 6.5 for undergraduate and 6.5 for postgraduate courses. Read more on our Study in Australia page.
IELTS Score for Other Popular Destinations
- Malaysia: 5.5 – 6.0 — one of the most accessible options for Bangladeshi students
- Finland: 6.0 – 6.5, with Writing often required at 5.5+
- Denmark & Sweden: 6.5 typical for English-taught programs
- New Zealand: 6.0 undergraduate, 6.5 postgraduate
- South Korea & Japan: 5.5 – 6.5 depending on whether the program is English-taught

How the IELTS Band Score Is Calculated
IELTS scores four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — each from 0 to 9. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band.
- Average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band (6.25 → 6.5)
- Average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band (6.75 → 7.0)
- Anything below .25 rounds down (6.1 → 6.0)
Worked example: Listening 6.5, Reading 6.0, Writing 5.5, Speaking 6.5 → total 24.5 ÷ 4 = 6.125 → overall 6.0.
Notice how a single weak band drags the overall down. This is why most universities set both an overall band and a minimum per-band score — and why “no band below 6.0” is often harder to hit than the overall itself.
Can You Study Abroad Without IELTS?
Sometimes — but the options are narrower than social media suggests. Common legitimate alternatives:
- MOI (Medium of Instruction) letter — some universities accept a letter proving your previous education was taught in English. Accepted more often in Canada and some UK universities; rarely for visa purposes.
- Alternative accepted tests — PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Duolingo English Test (acceptance varies widely by university and country).
- University’s own English test — some institutions run an internal assessment or interview.
- Pathway / foundation programs — you complete an English or foundation year, then progress to the degree.
Be careful: “study abroad without IELTS” is a phrase heavily used by unreliable agents. Even where a university waives it, the visa may still require proof of English. Always verify against the official rules before committing.
How to Improve Your IELTS Score
Most Bangladeshi students lose bands in Writing first, then Speaking — not because of vocabulary, but because of task structure and timing.
- Writing: learn the task structure before you learn “big words.” Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1 — practise a clear four-paragraph argument and finish on time.
- Speaking: fluency and coherence outweigh a perfect accent. Extend every answer with a reason and an example instead of stopping at one line.
- Reading: the problem is almost always time, not comprehension. Practise skimming and locating keywords rather than reading every word.
- Listening: train with different accents (British, Australian, North American) and practise spelling — misspelled answers are marked wrong.
- Take full mock tests under real timing. A score you get without time pressure is not your score.
Realistically, moving from 5.5 to 6.5 takes most students 8 to 12 weeks of structured preparation. Our IELTS Preparation course at BIIC runs small batches with regular mock tests and individual Writing and Speaking feedback — the two areas that decide your band.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum IELTS score to study abroad?
Generally 5.5 overall is the floor, and that mainly opens pathway, foundation or ELICOS-packaged options. For direct entry to a degree, plan for 6.0 – 6.5.
Is IELTS 6.5 a good score?
Yes. IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 is accepted for direct entry to the large majority of universities in the UK, Canada, Australia and the USA, and it clears every mainstream student visa English requirement.
What IELTS score do I need for a UK student visa?
For degree-level study the Home Office requires CEFR B2, roughly IELTS 5.5 in each band. Your university will usually ask for more — typically 6.0 for undergraduate and 6.5 for Master’s.
Is IELTS still required for Canada after SDS ended?
IRCC no longer prescribes a fixed band under the regular study permit stream, but your institution still sets an English requirement — usually 6.0 – 6.5. A strong score also strengthens your application overall.
What IELTS score is needed for an Australia student visa?
6.0 overall for the Subclass 500 visa, or 5.5 if you package at least 10 weeks of ELICOS before your main course.
How long is an IELTS score valid?
Two years from the test date. Some universities and immigration authorities apply a shorter window, so check before you rely on an older result.
How many times can I retake IELTS?
There is no limit. You can rebook as soon as a slot is available, and you may also apply for a One Skill Retake to re-sit a single weak section instead of the whole test.
Does a low IELTS score affect my visa approval?
Indirectly, yes. Once you meet the minimum, a higher score does not automatically improve your chances — but a borderline score can weaken the “genuine student” assessment, especially where your course requires strong English.
IELTS Academic or General Training for study abroad?
Academic. General Training is for migration and work, not for university admission.
